The closest to famous I ever felt was while on my mates stag do in Amsterdam when hundreds of tourists took our picture as we rode around town on a ‘beer bike’, all dressed as Freddie Mercury. But the second closest was in 2015…
2015 really was the year of media exposure for Jeff Wood Visuals Ltd. This wasn’t planned, it kind of just happened and mostly while I was on holiday.
The first sign of this bazaar run of events was in February when I was enjoying a long weekend, skiing in France with my wife. My phone started to go berserk with friends sending comments and images from the TV:-
At the end of 2014 I had been invited, by my friend Emma Wilson, along to an event that was part of the BBC series ‘The Fixer’ with Alex Polizzi. I had been interviewed as one of the ‘movers and shakers of the wedding industry’ (LOL) but thought nothing of it as what I had to say was pretty lame and I couldn’t imagine it being used. Fast forward to February and I have nearly 100 messages on Facebook, Twitter and text, from family and friends asking me ‘what the hell is my stupid face doing on their TV?!’
Fast forward to May and I’m in Petra, Jordan, on a passion project, shooting my friends from the 2people1life blog, Lisa and Alex. They were having one of their many weddings (it’s a long story) at the iconic Treasury of Petra. As a surprise to me at least, this event was covered by six different TV channels from all over the middle east!
Luckily, I wasn’t in the limelight but I did manage to get a frame grab from the video footage published by Huffington Post on their feature of the travelling/marrying couple:-
Then, in June, while on a short break with my family in Tenerife, I ‘suffered’ another onslaught of banter via my phone. Earlier, en-route to Petra, I had stopped in London to do a product press release for Sony, which involved me, presenting a workshop to media on how to shoot a friends wedding on a their new 4k Handi-cam. Being naive, I didn’t realise that all these media representatives were then going on to publish what they heard in the national press!
Content from the workshop and interviews got into The Daily Mail, Hello Magazine, Harpers Bazaar, The London Metro, to name but a few!
Until recently I considered this little ’15 minutes’ as a fun (and sometimes embarrassing) folly that would do nothing, in real terms, for the Jeff Wood Visuals brand. But I have since noticed that I have built relationships with people and companies that I, otherwise, never would have. Just last week I was sponsored by Sony to present two seminars at The Photography Show UK about how I shoot on their amazing Sony a7sII. I considered it a milestone in my career to have the opportunity to talk about a camera that I am so passionate about in so many ways.
Thanks 2015, it was a rollercoaster! Let’s see what 2016 brings!
